Director Liability in a Connected World

02:30 PM 03:45 PM Theater, Civic Center

Increasingly, bank customers, both business and consumer, are choosing electronic delivery channels over traditional branch banking. To support these demands, banks are investing in sophisticated delivery systems to provide real-time access for customers. In addition, banks are finding it increasingly important to manage their Internet and social media presence, as well as their Internet reputation across other platforms. Payment methods ranging from wire transfer to ACH to debit cards create the potential for significant fraud loss and also must be managed to mitigate risk. This session will guide directors and executive management in understanding the risk and exposure presented by today’s online environment and will also provide guidance to them as they seek to offer advice and oversight to bank management in addressing and managing such risks.

Accelerating Teamwork

02:30 PM 03:45 PM Rushmore Hall H (Upper Level), Civic Center

John C. Maxwell often says, “One is too small a number to achieve greatness.” But it could even be said that one is too small a number to achieve much of anything. To succeed in this world, we need to work with other people. Whether you’re a coach or player, teacher or student, parent or child, CEO or staff member, you’re a part of a team. That’s why teamwork is so important. Members of top-performing teams are committed to each other, focused on results, and willing to sacrifice personal glory for team success. This session by Rick VanDermyden will offer practical instruction on the value, description and development of teamwork, equipping both team leaders and members to commit to the success of the team over self, resulting in improved interaction and real results.

Since the election, the possibility of significant tax reform seems to be greater now than at any time since 1986. With both the legislative and executive branches making tax reform one of their top priorities, in this presentation, Tim LeClair and Blake Crow from Eide Bailly will review the impact of tax reform proposals on community banks and their owners. In addition to a review of the tax reform proposals, we will discuss the impact of these proposals on entity selection and ongoing strategies to capitalize on the possibility of reduced tax rates. In the event that legislation is passed prior to June, we will focus on the specifics of that legislation.

Who Moved My Customers? Transforming Branches & Retail Engagement

02:30 PM 03:45 PM Ponderosa (Upper Level), Civic Center

There are about 100,000 banking locations in the U.S. Most institutions have too many branches, and the ones they have are too big. Further, due to the explosion of online banking services, most branches are now too empty. As the purpose for the branch is changing, what will you do with your underutilized branch locations? David L. Peterson will discuss how creating an environment of branch engagement will lead the way to change how customers feel about their financial institution, particularly when visiting a physical office. We’ll examine three critical areas—consultative selling, education and advanced problem solving—and what it will take to transform existing branch operations (and the people that staff them) into strategic engagement centers.
